Happy Veterans Day!

Happy Veterans Day! If you or someone you know is a veteran, we want to start by saying THANK YOU.  With this being one of the holidays in the upcoming frenzy of them, we thought it would be a great topic for this Friday Five.  A holiday aimed to show respect and gratitude for those who have bravely served in the military.

Without further ado, some Veterans Day facts and organizations.

1. Armistice Day

The original name for the day was Armistice Day. The significance for this would be the armistice or temporary cease fire during World War 1(WW1)  on November 11, 1918.   While the official end of the war was 7 months later at the treaty of Versailles.

2. The Great War?

At the time WW1 was referred to as the great war as it involved so many world powers across the world.  It was collectively thought this was the war to end all wars.  Therefore, Britain, Canada, Australia, and France also celebrate veterans day on November 11th as well.

3. Transformations of the Day

While President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Armistice Day in 1919, it did not receive support from the U.S. Congress to pass a resolution until 1926.  Several years later in 1938 it finally became a federal holiday.

Then in 1954 President Eisenhower changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day so that it would honor all veterans and not just those from a single war.

4. Veterans Vs. Memorial Day

While both are to honor those who serve there is a distinction.  Memorial day is to honor those who gave their life due to war or injuries that were sustained during.  Veterans day on the other hand is to honor both those who are and are not still with us and have served regardless of serving in time of peace or war.

5. Five of the Many Nonprofits That are Dedicated to Our Veterans

Of the over 7,000 nonprofits that are U.S. based and work to serve veterans and military families there are countless ways to get involved and help.  When looking through many of them we listed some of our that we thought were doing a great job.

As always let us know if there is another fact you think should be included or what your favorite veteran NFP is!
