5 Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season

December 8, 2022  |   3 min read

5 Ways to Give Back this Holiday Season

It’s the end of the year and we are keeping the post short and sweet.  Read on to find some unique ways to give back this holiday season.

1. Give the Gift of Warmth

Buy some gloves and hats, make a scarf or give a coat that’s no longer in use. Whether you choose to spend money, DIY or recycle – warm gifts are always appreciated this time of year. Research local coat drives or donate to a local shelter.

2. Bring Joy to Children

Every child deserves to enjoy the magic of the holiday season. And when gifting is in abundance, its hard for little minds to understand why some might be getting more than others. Partner with a local school to help needy families in your community or donate toys to one of the many organizations who are collecting gifts such as Toys for Tots or Operation Christmas. Just check on guidelines – some require gifts to be brand new and unwrapped and others prefer gifts are wrapped and labelled.

3. Feed the Hungry

Food banks are collecting packaged non-perishable goods, churches are serving meals, and shelters are hosting those in need. Whether you donate canned goods that are collecting dust in your pantry (but check those expiration dates first!) or volunteer to help prep or serve a meal or choose to donate to an organization, it is all appreciated.

4. Support the Animals

Dogs and cats are also in need this festive season. Have a little extra time – maybe you could volunteer or foster a furry friend? Feeling the holiday rush – save time and donate to your local shelter, they always appreciate money but gifts such as blankets and unopened food or treats are also needed. Just remember, animals are not gifts, so if you’re thinking of adopting, make sure you can offer a forever home.

5. Perform a Random Act of Kindness

Not all giving requires planning or orchestration, sometimes spontaneity is what can put the biggest smiles on peoples’ faces. Pay it forward in line at the drive through, offer to help a neighbor, compliment a stranger, thank your local delivery workers. Kind acts do not go unnoticed in bringing JOY to everyone.

Year-End Giving

December 2, 2022  |   3 min read

Year-End Giving

It’s the end of the year. Have you hit your fundraising goals? If you find yourself coming up a bit short, now is the time to rally!

December is the peak of the festive season. Everyone seems to be in a spirited mood so it’s a great time to ask for money for your cause as many are willing to spread their holiday joy. But it is also a time rife with competition as many nonprofits are also hoping to capitalize on the occasion.

So, how can you stand out?

1. Get Ready.

It’s a busy time of year. You want your donation process to be easy. Go through all of your tools and make sure everything is working before you reach out to donors. Click links to make sure they work and reduce steps where you can. Clean your digital house – i.e your website and social media – and make things look festive and renewed. Review your mission and your impact statements to make sure they are clear and up to date for 2022.

You will be asking for attention from donors, so now is your time to really shine.

2. Say Thank You!

This season presents a wonderful opportunity to recognize past donors for their previous generosity. Making sure they know you are appreciative of them and affirming that their past contributions made a difference in your mission is important in putting them into the giving mindset.

3. Make Good.

Was there something you promised in one of your earlier campaigns? Perhaps a goal which was set or an activity to occur? If so, make sure you highlight that your promise was fulfilled so donors can see and know their money has made an impact. But not every goal is met, so if there was a promise made and you missed the mark, now is the time to make amends. Address any issues head on so you are accountable and donors feel there is transparency.

4. Do Not Oversaturate.

Reminding donors of your NPO and your mission is important this time of year. But at a time when everyone is on overload, do not send out daily campaigns or stuff their mailboxes with additional clutter. Streamline and come up with something meaningful and impactful to reach out to your donors, and then be strategic with how and when you reach out.

5. Make It Easy.

Donors might be willing to give, but they are likely also feeling overwhelmed with their holiday to-do lists. Asking them to attend an event or to invest time in your activities may be a stretch. But if you have a donation link, a cash collection box, or something else that is both easy and accessible it will make it easier for potential donors to open their wallets for a worthy cause.

5 Things for Which We Are Thankful

November 23, 2022  |   2 min read

5 Things for Which We Are Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving! It’s hard to believe this week is the “official” start to the holidays. For this edition of the Friday Five, we are getting festive and making a list…of five things for which we are most grateful. We’re doing this because it’s seasonal – it’s fun, of course! – and also because Research suggests practicing gratitude has a strong association with happiness. Don’t believe us? Harvard said so.

We are also encouraging you to make a list of 5 things you are grateful for this holiday season. With that, in no particular order here’s our 5.

1. Family

Family takes many forms.  Including but not limited to employees, partners, friends, and obviously family.  Our employees strive to make each day the best it can be. Our partners give us an opportunity to shoot for the moon. Our friends are special as we get to choose who we spend our time with.  While we don’t get to choose family, they are the ones that have your back and support you when needed most. We cherish them all.

2. Rest

We are grateful for work as it allows us to provide for ourselves as well as our families, but work/life balance is important.. As noted in our post about Labor Day, having holidays is necessary for that balance.  We are thankful we have days off this time of year and the opportunity to spend time with our families.

3. Health

Oftentimes our health, both physical and mental, is not something we think about until we don’t have it. Take time to take care of yourself, mind, body and soul.

4. Food

At DonorNinja, we’re a group of foodies. This makes us especially excited for Thanksgiving. Sharing meals has been a common thread which connects humanity for eons, and this time of year we are allowed to enjoy a little indulgence with our loved ones.

5. Sports

We like sports here, too. Sports, when played and enjoyed under the confines of friendly competition and community,  can be a terrific way to bring people together. While American Football is commonly associated with Thanksgiving, we have the added treat of the World Cup this year.

Sweet – no pun intended – and simple. Those are our five.

We hope you enjoyed – came up with 5 of your own – and spend the holiday with your friends, family, and those that mean the most to you.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Be the Change You Want to See in the World

November 18, 2022  |   4 min read

Be the Change You Want to See

The holidays, thanksgiving in particular, is a common time to be generous with both time and money.  In our post a few weeks ago, we discussed how to get ready for the last campaign push by focusing on cash donations. This week we’ll cover what you can do to help make the world a little brighter.

There are so many ways to get involved, it’s almost hard to wrap your head around it. Think of stuff like working at a food bank or volunteering to work the Salvation Army basket for the angel tree program.  A quick internet search will provide results for local charities including where and how to get started. After all, volunteering yourself could be a great way to learn how to best structure your own volunteering programs.

But we understand life can get all life about things, and maybe there’s not time or capacity to get involved as a volunteer just yet. Being the change you want to see does not have to be the largest action, but rather can be started by many little – but meaningful – actions.

For today’s Friday Five we will be breaking down some random acts of kindness.  If you are not familiar with the principle, it’s that each act of kindness will cause the recipient to do something kind in turn, keeping the cycle of kindness going.

Here are a few ideas.

1. Hold the Door

The little things, in our humble opinion, really matter. This small act does not take more than a few seconds but can change the course of someone’s entire day and shift their mood for the better. And all because you were kind while going about your daily routine. So next time, go ahead and hold that door.

2. Donate

Most of us amass stuff rapidly, if not somewhat silently, pace. Have you ever looked around your place and thought, “where did all of this come from?” Yeah, us as well. As we enter the gifting season, take stock of the items you don’t need / rarely use / know would make a better living in another home and donate. Also consider that while the end of the year brings holidays and time spent with friends and family, it also brings the cold.

Especially for northern states.  This makes for the perfect time to go through your blankets, coats, socks, and any other garments that can make all the difference to a new owner. Any material that provides warmth would be of utmost value for more people than you think. So if you’re not going to wear it – maybe even on the verge of getting a new one – consider donating it to someone in need.

3. Get Tidy

As cities, towns, and all other communities have grown, so has the amount of garbage and litter which has collected in our parks, beaches, and even roads.  Be part of the cleanup efforts we need to keep our planet healthy and vibrant. All you need are gloves, trashbags and the willingness to be a part of positive change.

Grab a friend, or a few, and make it an event. By the time you fill a bag, you will be amazed at how much better the area looks. You will also have a tangible result to show your hard work.  With any luck, some onlookers may even join in to help! But as always, give back safely and obey all laws and regulations. Safety first.

4. Give a Little Big... Of Yourself

Giving a part of yourself sounds a little wonky, we get it, but can be quite impactful. What do we mean by this? For starters, donating blood or hair are safe, sustainable and crucial ways to help those experience severe illness or injury. There may not be the additional benefit of seeing the person you helped, but you can know it made all the difference to them! In fact, we here at DonorNinja are blood donors and hair donors ourselves.

5. Be a Gift Giver

For a lot of us, the holidays are a time of giving, largely predicated from a position of having a little extra. Sure, sometimes we stretch the budget a bit to make that little extra magic happen. But by and large, we’re able to give because we have the means to do so.

What tends to get lost in the season are those who are not able to celebrate because of any number of circumstances/hardships. So let’s try not to forget to give them a hand, too. There are any number of ways to sponsor a family, classroom, child, etc to make sure their holiday is a little warmer and brighter. Look around for what makes sense for you, do what you can and feel a little better that someone in need had a more merry holiday season because of your generosity.

Random acts of kindness are not limited to what is on the list.  Taking time to think about someone else and make their day is all it takes.  Let us know some of your favorite acts of kindness that you partake in!

Happy Veterans Day!

November 11, 2022  |   4 min read

Happy Veterans Day!

Happy Veterans Day! If you or someone you know is a veteran, we want to start by saying THANK YOU.  With this being one of the holidays in the upcoming frenzy of them, we thought it would be a great topic for this Friday Five.  A holiday aimed to show respect and gratitude for those who have bravely served in the military.

Without further ado, some Veterans Day facts and organizations.

1. Armistice Day

The original name for the day was Armistice Day. The significance for this would be the armistice or temporary cease fire during World War 1(WW1)  on November 11, 1918.   While the official end of the war was 7 months later at the treaty of Versailles.

2. The Great War?

At the time WW1 was referred to as the great war as it involved so many world powers across the world.  It was collectively thought this was the war to end all wars.  Therefore, Britain, Canada, Australia, and France also celebrate veterans day on November 11th as well.

3. Transformations of the Day

While President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Armistice Day in 1919, it did not receive support from the U.S. Congress to pass a resolution until 1926.  Several years later in 1938 it finally became a federal holiday.

Then in 1954 President Eisenhower changed the name from Armistice Day to Veterans Day so that it would honor all veterans and not just those from a single war.

4. Veterans Vs. Memorial Day

While both are to honor those who serve there is a distinction.  Memorial day is to honor those who gave their life due to war or injuries that were sustained during.  Veterans day on the other hand is to honor both those who are and are not still with us and have served regardless of serving in time of peace or war.

5. Five of the Many Nonprofits That are Dedicated to Our Veterans

Of the over 7,000 nonprofits that are U.S. based and work to serve veterans and military families there are countless ways to get involved and help.  When looking through many of them we listed some of our that we thought were doing a great job.

As always let us know if there is another fact you think should be included or what your favorite veteran NFP is!

Getting Ready For Holiday Seaosn

November 4, 2022  |   4 min read

Getting Ready for Holiday Season

Happy Friday and welcome back to the Friday Five! It’s officially November. The weather is starting to shift cooler, clocks are – at least for another year – rolling back and the deluge of Halloween candy is a sign of the upcoming holidays. This is a time generally associated with being especially thankful and, most importantly,  generous.

The holiday season can be a perfect way to end your year of fundraising strong. Let’s make sure you are ready for the final push with a few helpful tips from your friends at DonorNinja.

1. Take Part in Giving Tuesday

For those who do not know, “Giving Tuesday” is November 29th this year.

To quote from their website, “Giving Tuesday is a movement that unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world.”  Start spreading your awesome message now, and synergize fundraising efforts with a reminder of Giving Tuesday amongst your constituents. It might be the push they need to donate. Click here to learn even more tips and how you can participate.

2. Who Doesn’t Love A Good Story?

We’ve mentioned this in other posts because it’s tried and true. Stories help us relate and connect.  When you tap into your donor’s emotions and empathy, there is a much greater likelihood they will support your organization. So tell your stories.

You can tell a story in any number of mediums – email, social media, in person – but you will want to make sure the content rings true with the audience and holds their attention. Social media and videos are the hottest ways to get in front of a large audience at the moment, so think about getting your message out there for maximum return.

3. Engage!

Having your supporters donate is great, critical even. But retention and repetition is a game of engagement. Allow your constituents the opportunity to get involved. Whether it’s a one off event or a hyper focused day, getting engagement from your supporters gives them real feedback on their contributions. As we;ve said before, once your constituents feel good about their support, they are more willing to support financially short and long-term.

4. Start Early

Like people decorating for Christmas in August, give yourself ample time to make a year-end plan. Leveraging the holidays is a terrific way to find some last minute donations and capitalize on the general seasonal cheer, but it’s going to be a whole lot more successful if you strategize on how to holistically do this early.

5. Have a Strong Digital Footprint

This is thematic to so many of our posts and does not change with the seasons. Take advantage of technology and software by running a virtual mail and/or social media campaign – in this case themed around the holidays and Giving Tuesday – to increase reach and donations. Remember, many users first see your website on their mobile device. If your website is not mobile friendly, they may be gone for good.

For more tips on this, check out our previous post about Modern Tech Solutions

Thanks for tuning in and as always be sure to let us know which were your favorite or if you have any other suggestions.

Gear Up for No-Shave November

October 21, 2022  |   4 min read

Gear Up for No-Shave November

Now that we are into the final stretch of October, it is a great time to start thinking about No-Shave November!  While some may grow out their facial hair for a little extra warmth, this web-based family run charity is raising both awareness and money for cancer education, prevention, and research.

Due to the strong treatments that many cancer patients undergo, one common symptom is the loss of hair.  To raise awareness, No-Shave challenges participants to put down that razor, forgo the barber shop or salon and grow their hair out.

So without further ado, here is what you need to know to gear up for No-Shave November?

1. No-Shave Beginning

In 2009, the Hill family decided to take the idea of growing out facial hair and turn it into a way to raise awareness and money for cancer research.  This family run charity had a personal connection due Matthew Hill, who passed away from colon cancer in 2007.

Ever since, the month of November continues to be synonymous with hair growth and cancer awareness.  If nothing else, they have been successful with this!

2. Who Can Participate?

Only men who can grow facial hair can participate, right?

Wrong!!!  Anyone can participate! Sure, while the concept of raising awareness was by growing out facial hair, but since then it has turned into so much more.  Even if you do not want to stop shaving, which you should, you can create a team and fundraise together.  Whether your work colleagues, friends, or family members, no group is too big.

3. How to Sign Up

Participants can sign up with a team or individually.  Participants can sign up here.  Once signing up choose a fundraising goal and participating cancer charity to sponsor.  Once signed up, you can set up your page, add additional information, and select a fundraising goal.  If you are joining a team, this can also be done from your profile.

If fundraising as a team,  the person who creates the team will be considered the captain.  This does not include any extra responsibilities though.  Once the team page is created, the remaining members will enter the team name to join on their profile page.

4. What Next

Once your page(s) are fully set up it is time to do one of the most important aspects, which is to put those razors down.  For those who are normally clean shaven they will see the biggest changes and most likely field the most questions.  When asked why this is a great time to spread awareness.

Also don’t forget to fundraise!  Share your page with friends, family, or anyone you want to.  Since No-Shave is web-based, it is easy to share your page through social media to increase exposure.

Some Beard Facts To Close

Here are some beard facts that we thought were interesting:

  • Pogonophobia is the fear of beards, and can include other facial hair such as mustaches or goatess.
  • Beards offer a variety of protection from both harmful UV rays as well as the wind and cold
  • In 17th century Russia, you had to pay a tax for the right to have a beard

To conclude, Gillette provided 15 facial hair styles, which are grouped on facial shape.  Stay hairy!

Tech Solutions for Non-Profit Organizations

October 13, 2022  |   4 min read

Nonprofit Grant Management Tips

Happy Friday. If you’re here, you’ve made it to the Friday Five!

This week we’ll be talking about some modern tech solutions to ensure your organization has a professional look and takes advantage of every opportunity. From having a mobile friendly website to software which will “double your donations,” there are some great tools and tips available. Keep reading to learn how to take advantage of them.

1. Make Your Website Mobile Friendly

A benefit of having an online presence is your organization can grow its exposure by getting in front of more people.  An online footprint begins with your website.  According to Statista, mobile web traffic continues to grow. Through 2022, over 55% of online traffic is from mobile devices.  What was once considered the first impression – a mobile device view – is sometimes the entire experience.

As this percentage continues to increase yearly, it is more important than ever to make sure your website is fully responsive to all devices.  Responsiveness is considered the ability for your website to slightly change based on screen size.  For example, a user on a desktop will have much more screen available than a user on a mobile phone.  Thankfully, many templated website builders offer the ability to craft your website so everything shows best, regardless of device.

2. Increase Your Reach

By getting in front of more people there is a better chance that you will receive more donations.  Grow the online exposure of your organization by making sure you are listed on platforms such as Guidestar, Google, and Yelp.

Pro Tip: Socials are a common way to stay in contact with donors and reach new ones. While pictures tell a million words, today videos are telling a billion. Videos are the best content type you can post.  Keep in mind, while socials are great tools for communication it’s important not to have more than can be managed.  Remember, they are a representation of your organization so you’ll want to make sure what you have it well manicured.

3. Reach Out for Help

As the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day.”  Similarly, it was not built by one person.  There is only so much you can do. Reaching out for help allows you to focus on what you do best.  This can vary by organization, taking different forms.  Maybe you are looking for an IT consultant, accounting assistance, or even a full managed service provider.  Regardless of level, removing some barriers will give you more time to complete your mission!

4. Don't Waste Your Data

Data, data, data.  These days everything is recorded and measured so you can get stats on anything and everything.  What to do with all this data?  Utilizing a CRM tool can help you manage your database and run informational reports to take action.

5. Promote Donation Matching

It’s common for organizations to have donation matching programs to help give back to nonprofits and the community.  Oddly enough, it is not as common to know if your organization participates in these programs.  To combat this, look into donation matching tools.  These tools can be added at the end of the donation process.  Once finished, the donor can search to see if their organization offers this program.  If yes, they can submit the proper paperwork to get approved.  Once approved, you received double the donation at no extra effort for you. Winner!

We hope that you enjoyed our tips.  If you had a favorite or any others we would love to see your thoughts!

Granting Your Oraginization Sucess

September 30, 2022  |   5 min read

Granting Your Organiztion Sucess

Welcome back to another Friday Five. This week we wanted to revisit a pivotal piece of fundraising for successful nonprofits.   Grants are funding from the government that can be used or restricted to any number of purposes. Winning the grant is the first step in this process.  Once it is secured, managing it properly is just as important to continue qualifying and therefore receiving more funding and hopefully new grants as well.

Since grants are funding from the government, there will be paperwork and organization that needs to take place.  At the end of the day this is similar to an audit.  Grants can be restricted by time, purpose, or both. Here are some tips to make managing your grants easier!

1. Understand. Your. Grant.

Before you start the painstaking process of gathering and filling out information, it is best to review what the requirements are to stay in good standing.  As mentioned, they can be time and or purpose restricted so it is best to have an idea of where and how this will be used.  These restrictions can be temporary or permanent. Knowing the specific functions needed will save headaches and ensure that you continue to qualify in the future.

2. Standard Recording and Documentation

Like any other process it is best to set up a documentation and recording process before it is needed.  After setting up your chart of accounts, you will have a framework for recording.  More on this here.  This way when you receive the grant you can record the revenue to the appropriate account and create a class for it.  Our accounting team can further explain this or answer other questions.

For storing support documents, a virtual folder can be a handy tool.  Since it is stored virtually, all those involved can access and add documents as needed. You can take this a step further and create a folder for every month.  This way when it is time to prepare your report / voucher packet, all the documents are organized and easy to take action against.

3. Create Templates

Templates save time! When executing commonly repeated actions, templates will ease the repetition and speed up your process.

Pro Tip: This is not solely applicable to grants. Payroll and benefits are great for templates, too. Creating templates for these helps speed up the process of allocating expenses. You’ll improve accuracy and gain efficiency as more of your focus is being used on the task at hand.

4. Use It or Lost It!

Now that you have a great documentation process – use it! Sounds simple, failing to use the great system you worked out leads to frustration, and possibly worse abandonment.  It is easy to let urgent and unexpected fires take priority and focus, which is all the more reason to set aside some time to stay organized.

Rather than breaking focus to enter one or two transactions.  Take a few minutes before lunch, at the end of the day, or even once a week to stay organized. The reality is adherence to the process and regular maintenance is what takes the work. But you did the work, so use the system!

5. Use Software Wisely

Software is great, until it’s not. Far too often we seek to have software solve a problem only to create a workaround here, there, and everywhere. Software tools have become so intertwined in our everyday life that it can be hard to remember a time without them, but we need to be smart about which ones we use.

Before spending the money – and time – implementing a system or multiple systems, think through all the critical paths, the problems solved and the administrative work associated with a deployment. Try to find tools that work easily and reliably with one another, and don’t take a software engineer to configure or manage. Software used wisely can save you time and energy, but the wrong tools, in any quantity, will have the reverse effect.

DonorNinja is a nonprofit tool that offers grant management along with many other features.  Schedule a demo to learn about how DonorNinja can help you better leverage your data.

Five Tips For Tribute and Memorial Giving

September 23, 2022  |   5 min read

Five Tips For Tribute and Memorial Giving

It’s Friday, so obviously it’s Friday Five time. This week we’ll discuss Tribute and Memorial Giving.

America is widely considered to be one of the more generous countries when looking at donating time, money and assisting strangers. According to the World Index, when comparing countries over the years America ranks first, tied with Mayar. This is why so many nonprofits are able to be successful from sea to shining sea.

A common reason for donating is in someone’s name for a cause which is/was either dear to said person, or part of remembering them. This is referred to as a tribute or memorial donation.  Let’s get right to tips on how to keep track of your tributes and some best practices.

1. In Honor or Memory

Okay, we need to get a tad sensitive for a moment. When giving on behalf of another person the first distinguishing factor is their living status, or what side of the ground they’re occupying. This option should be presented at the beginning of the tribute process as delicately as possible. If the person is alive – which is great – the donor is making a contribution “In Honor” of them.  For example, a family member who makes a tribute donation to the Breast Cancer Society for their aunt who beat breast cancer would make this donation in honor of her. A great cause, to be sure.

On the other hand, if the person is no longer with us, the donation is made in their memory.

It’s simple, but important. And delicate. Very delicate.

2. Normal or Restricted

The donor typically has the option to specify how the money is to be used.  Most tributes are unrestricted, therefore can be treated as a normal donation. In this case, your organization can use the donation at its discretion. PRO TIP: For the recording process, there should be a note by the donation referencing for whom it was made.

Like other donations, tributes with restrictions can influence time, purpose, or both.  If they are restricted, they should be recorded as such and only be used accordingly.

3. How to Best Track Tributes

Keeping track of tributes in a spreadsheet can be frustrating and time consuming.  Using a CRM is best practice. Everything is recorded at once and easily referenceable.  Not to toot our own horn, but we think DonorNinja has a robust donation tool which allows for a seamless donation recording process, including tributes.

4. Express Gratitude, Notify a Beneficiary

If using a CRM, a donation receipt and thank you letter is likely automatically sent.  It’s worth noting if this is not the case, it should be. Especially for this type of donation.

During the creation process of the tribute, you can offer the donor the ability to specify how to notify the beneficiary.  How the beneficiary is notified will depend on whether this was an “in honor” or “in memory” tribute. While this is likely a personal donation, and while your organization may have the necessary information, providing a field for either email or physical address ensures everything goes to the proper place.

PRO TIP: As emails are so common these days, a physical letter might make a larger impact.

5. Symbolic Meaning

By creating a memorable experience for the tribute benefactor, they are more likely to be a repeat donor.  Offer the ability to “adopt” an animal, student, road, etc. Specifying where the donation is going can make a special donation all the more impactful.  While a gift can be sent with good intentions, we urge you to be careful as the cost of the gift could be seen as a reduction of the tribute, even if that’s not the case.

Have a good weekend and as always, share and comment your thoughts or if you have any others!
